Spring 26

I replaced the main halyards with 100 ft of 9/16 StaSet which was a long time coming.

I tightened the forestry about a turn before I discovered that I had not set the furler up correctly. There is a tube that holds the foil in place. I had not realized that it needed to be adjusted to not sit on the turnbuckle. I moved it up about 3/4 of an inch. I hope this makes furling easier.

   I installed a new compass a Ritchie W72.

I serviced the three main thru hulls with Spartan grease and I serviced the two cabin top winches as well.

I changed the transmission fluid. The old came out pretty black which suggests it was good that I changed it.

I bought 90 feet of new anchor chain which was BBB 5/16 so to eliminate the clip in the middle of the old chain.

Launched on 6/17/26 from Knights Marine

Summer 2025

Check the adventures of Nutmeg for a blow by blow of this summers adventure. I did fight the same fuel leak all summer. I put a funnel under the fuel filter and caught the fuel in a bottle in the bilge. We also had trouble with the rudder stuffing box leaking. It leaked only when moving so we would get about a pint or two every 3 or 4 hours of motoring. We did purchase a new main sail from Bohndell Sails in Rockport. It is a loose footed main with the top two battens full and partial for the bottom ones. We also purchased a morring in Rockland harbor from Curtis Milton. Our friend Dale was instrumental in arranging the deal. we also got a deal on a pair of Stainless steel dorade vents which we promptly installed. Hauled out at Knights Marine on 9/9.

Spring 2025

Due to my surgery we didn't do much to the boat last year. I did drive down to Rock Hall and covered it  but that was about it. I have been fighting with a diesel leak at the primary fuel filter. I tried replacing the crush washers but not much changed.

In the spring I serviced all 5 sea cocks with Spartan grease and painted depth marks on the anchor chain. I painted the bottom and installed the repaired water system manifold. I made a new manifold with ball valves instead of the old gate valves. I have found if you suck a tank dry you need to open the bow tank to fill the pump and then it will draw. We were launched on 5/13 /2025 a swans Creek Marina in Rock Hall Maryland.

Summer 2023

June 16th- I attached 2 solar panels to the frame and hooked them up. Now we can have refrigeration. I removed the cabin heater as it was falling apart and I replaced the T in the line with a regular connector. I removed all the old copper pipe to the stove. I changed the transmission fluid using a syringe and small tube. Filled with ATF. I changed the primary fuel filter. After bleeding the motor I had a hard time starting it. I finally had to crack an injector and crank for a while but it eventually started. I was on the phone to Gordon as he was walking me through it. Thanks to him. I adjusted the valves and the spring that pulls back the shutoff had broken so I pull it over the arm and now it works fine.

June 19th - Alayne painted the bottom with Interlux aqua coat. We used 1 gallon for the whole boat. Then I sanded and painted the boot stripe with Epifanes waterline paint. I put a new zinc on and retightened the prop.

June 21st- launched today. everything went fine we motored out to the mooring and put the sails on.

July 3rd- checked the oil this morning and it looked very high so I wa suspecting diesel in the oil. I had a spare lift pump but it turned out that it did not fit so I ended up checking the old one and putting it back in. I then ran new battery cables to the starter  and the #2 bank (#2 size). I attached them to the back of the master switch with right angle connectors so they wouldn't be bent all the time.

July5th- repaired starboard side settee lamp as it had water in it again. I plugged the hole with duck compound and had to drill a new hole so hopefully the water will drain out the old hole and not into the lamp.

Checked the oil again and found it to be fine. I think the problem had more to do with a false reading on the dip stick. I did order a new lift pump from Trans Atlantic Diesel.

July 8-9 drove down tp MA to visit with my mom in the hospital. It has been very foggy and damp here ever since we launched. It has been hard to see the islands most days.

July 11 made it out to Perry's Creek for a night and then the next day out the thorofare and around North Haven to Pulpit. Motored back into Rockland the next dat just ahead of the fog again.

July 16- John and Sue came up for a visit. We did manage to get out for a sail before the fog rolled back in again. we had a nice time with them.

July 19- headed out to Barred Islands with Peggy and Denny. We went up to Stockton Springs and had dinner at the restaurant to celebrate our anniversary. We sailed to Smith Cove for a couple of nights before going to Buck's Harbor and then onto Wooden Boat. From there we went on alone to McGlathery Island, Seal Bay and then back to Rockland. In Seal Bay we pulled the dinghy on deck and deflated it and patched a hole with some G-Flex.

July 30- Hooked up a solar controller to the panel on the cabin top. This will serve the #1 battery.

Aug 1- Had a nice visit with Jon and Allison and Bruce and Shirley. We got J+A out for a nice sail. They even spent a night on the boat.

Aug 6th- Start of the Cape Dory cruise. we had 10 people show up for the opening dinner. From there we went to Tenants Harbor for a couple of days due to a storm. Then to Round Pond and Cheryll Allens place and finally on to Boothbay where we had 10 people for the closing dinner.

We had a great sail back from Boothbay to Maple Juice Cove with just the jib up. Averaged over 5 knots. We headed back to Rockland the next day and again had a nice sail in light winds. We sailed from Maple Juice around the end of Hupper Island and then out past Mosquito and all the way out Two Bush to Vinal Haven and back to Rockland.

Aug 15th- headed back to VT for a couple of weeks until we leave on the trip south

Spring 2023

April 29th- It was cold when I came over this time. It was barely in the 50's and at night it was in the low 30's. It was perfect for testing out the new Buddy Heater that I would like to use to replace the cabin heater. It heated the cabin from 40 to 60 in an hour on high and then I turned it down to low and it maintained that temp until the bottle froze. Anyway it was a zip up the sleeping bag night.

I added an extra hinge to the nav table so now we can open it without having everything slide off. I then remounted the coaming boards that I had refinished this winter. I used butyl tape to seal up the holes and then caulked the deck edge. I opened up the fuel tank clean out and found that the tank was very clean. I could see right to the bottom and there was only a few specs of black. I then rebedded the middle water tank deck fitting with butyl tape as I think it was leaking into the hanging locker. I serviced 4 of the 5 seacocks. I cleaned them and greased them with Spartan grease. The only one I didn't do was the port side cockpit drain. I may do this one later. I cetoled the inside of the coaming boards with one coat of cetol. I cleaned and serviced the starboard main cockpit winch.

May 19th- Added 12+ gal of diesel which put the level at 5/8. I installed the new motor panel. I ended up putting it back in the same spot as I just couldn't find a better spot. I did however make a completely new panel and moved the oil and water temp gauges to the forward side so hopefully I can see them easier. It has all new wires and connections and the lights on the gauges now work.( LED lights). I cleaned the ground spot for the #1 battery down to bare metal as it was quite rusty and may have been why I have had so much trouble starting the motor with that battery. I am wondering as this is where the bonding system attaches if that needs to grounded to the motor. I made a frame from the old bimini frame that goes off the stern to hold another solar panel. And I mounted a carved dolphin to the boat under the bowsprit.

Summer 2022

6/14/22- We arrived in Rockland today and got right to work hooking up the solar panels so we could have some electricity. I put the garboard plug in and attached the zinc to the shaft. We then went to a full moon party at Murph's. The next day I finished installing the sink with a brass tailpiece underneath. I changed the Racor filter and bled the motor. It started right up. Meanwhile Alayne painted the bottom. In order to expediate the shuffling of boats they wanted to know if we could be launched tomorrow. Sure!!

Launching went fine and we got settled on the mooring which is the same as last years. I installed the anchor windlass with the new base which has a hole in the deck for the chain to run through. I also put some plastic floor tiles in the anchor locker. I reamed out the hole for the compass so now it should fit better and maybe not leak. I added 2 cans ( around 10 gal) of diesel with biobor jf added.

6/19/22- It was very cold and windy today. We basically hid out below. We had to change the propane tank as it ran out.  This was mostly because we ran it last night to stay warm. I checked the transmission fluid and it was down a bit so I added some. I installed a 125 amp fuse the #2 battery system. It is a terminal fuse which I installed at the middle + terminal which is the one that is the main feed. I noticed the mooring line was chafing on the bowsprit bobstay so I sewed  on some leather chafe gear.

6/26/22- I adjusted the rigging today with the loos gauge. Back stay-48; Quarter stay 42; Cap stays 42; Front lower 37; aft lower 35

6/29/22- Motored all the way to McGlathery Island. I found about 1/2 qt of salt water in the bilge. I suspect either the stuffing box or the impeller pump. I did add 1/2 pint of water to the expansion tank of the motor.

7/4/22- We got a mooring at Northeast Harbor today with no problem.  the busses were now running so we asked the driver for his recommendation for a hike. He said go to Jordan Pond and take the loop around the pond until you come to the Bubbles trail. you then just scramble up the trail and its a great view. Well it turns out that the trail is the second most dangerous tourist attraction. You had to scramble up sheer rock faces on the edge of cliffs that were several hundred feet high. We made it and the view was spectacular fortunately there was an alternative way down that was much less frightening. We got back to the boat and then went to dinner at The Colonels in NE Harbor. The next day we did some laundry and rode the bus to Bar Harbor where we walked around and did some grocery shopping. It was very crowded as compared to the marina which was still not very busy. This was a good time to come here as they had just opened only the week before.

From there we headed on over to Frenchboro and took a mooring. Turns out the restaurant was not open this year so we took a hike. While the hiking is supposed to be very nice here we found the trail to be a little overgrown and hard to follow. There were some nice views though.

As we headed up the east side of Swans Island we were tacking into the light wind. As we approached Casco Passage the wind increased so we put the motor on. About in the middle we heard a rumbling sound underneath the boat. We assumed we had hit a lobster buoy and sure enough it popped up astern. We kept motoring until we reached the mouth of the Eggmogin Reach where we decided to sail. The wind had been forecasted to be SW but was really NW so it was right on the nose. After a while we heard this clanking noise underneath the boat and we couldn't figure out what was making it. We ended up short tacking all the way to Wooden Boat where we sailed onto a mooring. I then dove down and found the prop was loose and had fallen off the shaft. The rudder was the only thing keeping it on the boat. The prop nuts were completely gone. I took the line off that was twisted around the shaft. Fortunately I had a spare key way and put that on and tied the prop to the boat. I then went in search of prop nuts. Niether Wooden Boat or Brooklin Boat Yard had any so I had Brooklin Boat Yard order some. Both Wooden Boat and Brooklin were great during this ordeal. After 3 days the yard arranged for a diver who came and put the prop nuts back on and away we went.

7/19/22- We checked our inshore life jackets today and discovered that both cylinders were bad. Good thing we haven't had to use them. Both were replaced with spares that were on board.

7/27/22- Replaced the Jabsco impeller pump. I had noticed a small leak which had suddenly gotten bigger 5186.8 nmiles on the motor. I had a medical event happen the other day. I had been having trouble swallowing and after putting up with it for a couple of days I finally went to the emergency room. It turns out I had an abcess behind my tonsil which was spreading. I had surgery that day and it was much relieved. It was however Alayne's first night out on the boat by herself.

8/22/22- Changed Raycor filter. It had about an inch of water in the bottom of the bowl and filter element was black nearly to the top. Engine hours 5216.2 which means it was 61 hrs since it was changed last.

9/22/22- Hauled at Knights Marine with 5226.5 hrs on motor for 71.9 total for the season. We had 1474 nmiles on the speedo for 662 total miles for the season.

I winterized the motor and this time I removed the impeller. I removed the prop and retightened it with the bigger nut up against the prop. I filled in the anchor line hawse hole from the starboard side and glassed it over. I removed the instrument panel and glassed over the hole in the cockpit. I also removed the coaming boards and brought them home for refinishing.

Spring 2022

4/20/2022- I came over to Rockland early and the yard was very full. I could not drive any closer than the paint barn. I removed the old galley sink and fitted the new one in.I played around with where to put the faucet. I put the hard dodger top on and then put the patterning material around and tried to make a pattern. I had made a new box for the water bottle storage and I fitted that in the salon. Then I removed the end of the boom and untwisted the lines to the outhaul so that it works now. I expect it to just retwist at some point but at least the bolts came out and I put them back in with Tefgel. I rebuilt and installed the rear gusher pump.

5/22/2022-Installed the new faucet which is hooked up to the foot pump. I installed a sprayer with hose to the pressure water. I disconnected the hot water pipe from the pressure water. I replaced the drain hose to the galley sink with sanitation hose. While there I serviced the sea cock with red grease. I installed 4 hex head bolts in the end of the boom coating them with Tef gel. I removed the windlass and cut a new hole for the anchor line to run through. I brought the base home to make a new one out of PVC board. I had made a grated stool for Alayne which will wrap around the tiller pad at the end of the cockpit. We'll see if this is a viable thing. I climbed in the bilge and painter the steering support beam with neutra rust. I will paint a second coat later. I also painted the engine mounts with the same. Added a new bleeder valve to the vented loop coming from the motor. I used one from a vented loop I had bought and attached it to the fitting I had earlier JB Welded onto the metal loop. I am prepared with an alternate plan if this fails to work. I replaced the batteries in the smoke detector. I then serviced all 3 mast winches. I installed an AIS transponder and hooked up all the wires. It should be ready to go.
